Free Promotional Ideas from A to Z. We have a lot of different businesses here and we have put them in alphabetical order.  With the hope that it will be a resource on how businesses could use vacation incentives?

Incentive Magazine, USA Today, American Express Incentive Services, University of Chicago have all done studies on what incentive motivates people the most. They found that Vacation Incentives is the #1 motivator.

Before we get started with the individual businesses and types of applications perhaps we should touch on internal promotions. 

Every business can use internal promotions.  Awards where they give vacations to the salespeople for good performance or they award it back in the shop for safety awards or for having a safe year.  Or maybe at the end of the year if someone has had perfect attendance, they might get a vacation for that.  And of course, the obvious, the birthdays, the baby gifts, the wedding gift or replacing the Christmas turkey with something a little more original and maybe just a little bit more exciting than just a Christmas turkey. 

Certainly all businesses have more customers to award than they do employees to award.  The business should use vacation incentives for their customers and help them to build profitability. Then the business will look at the vacation incentive as being something that can provide them a return on an investment rather than just being another expense for the business.

Return on investment, that’s a very, very key point and business owners are looking for more profitability.  They are all interested in that bottom line and what impacts the bottom line most in their eyes is increasing that business.  Getting more consumers to visit their store, getting more consumers to purchase their product, getting more consumers to purchase higher profit items.  Or getting them to buy more of their product rather than their competitor’s product. 

For wholesalers, the incentive idea might be to get better shelf space, better display area in the retailer’s store for his particular product.  Before, we really get started with these; there are certain ways that all businesses can use promotions for their consumers.  That we see a lot of the salespeople going out and selling sweepstakes type promotions.  Come into the store.  Register to win and we are going to give away a vacation.  Then they can improve that a little bit by doing some sort of weighted sweepstakes, which is for every $100 that you purchase you’re going to get your name in the hat to win a vacation.  And so obviously, the more that you purchase, the more opportunities that you have to win.  And that makes a little bit more sense for the business.  But neither one of these promotions really from our experience, improved profitability in that business tremendously. 

The incentive promotions that we see that really work are those that are structured where we ask the consumer to take a certain action and when he takes that action, he gets the vacation incentive.  Like do this and we get the vacation.  Or buy this and you get a vacation.  It simply takes some action and that action will result in the vacation incentive being awarded to me.

So it’s not, “win a vacation incentive”, it’s “earn a vacation incentive”.

I think that the “earn a vacation incentive” is a term that conveys I’m not giving this away.  My customers are doing something to earn it.  Let’s jump in here.  Let’s talk about some kinds of businesses.

Incentive Ideas for Apartment Complexes

One to me that seems obvious, but may not be obvious to other people, is driving down the road and you see that sign out in front of an apartment complex that says “Sign a one year’s lease and get a free month’s rent”.

When you look at what a free month’s rent costs an apartment complex, that could be five, six, seven hundred, a thousand dollars depending on the area of the country that we are living in, certainly the vacation incentive is a cost saver for that business yet adds tremendous excitement.  And wouldn’t it be exciting to say “Sign up for a one year lease and get a great family vacation” rather than a free month’s rent?  Cash, basically a cash incentive that offers very little incentive to build a relationship. I certainly think that it is more exciting and it is certainly something different.  The old free month’s rent I see it on every corner and it gets pretty boring after a while.  It’s what everybody is doing.  So why not do something different and separate yourself from the competition?

You know another idea for an apartment complex is they have a number of people that are leasing apartments right now they’re present at the facility that these people may be tapped for referrals to other people that may want to sign a lease at the apartment complex so perhaps we can have a vacation promotion geared towards the current residents.  And say, gee, simply bring us someone that signs a one year lease with our complex and we are going to give you a great family vacation.

I would certainly think that if an apartment complex had several vacancies that it would be well worth the money that the vacation incentive would cost them to get a referral for someone who would come in and sign a year lease with them.

Incentive Ideas For Appliance Wholesalers|

When I think of an Appliance Wholesalers I’m thinking of a distributor of ovens, refrigerators, freezers and things of that nature that do business directly with builders or possibly remodeling contractors, kitchen remodelers where that remodeler or builder might refer their customer, the homeowner, to that particular Appliance Wholesaler to pick out the particular appliances that they want in their kitchen.

So what I'm saying is that I’m going to buy a new home from ABC Home Company and although it is a home that is a standard model that they build, there will come a time that he says to me, “Alright John, it’s time for you to go pick out your appliances.”  And I would get to pick those out because I’ve already contracted to buy this house; I get to pick out my own appliances.  And he would send me down to a company he had a relationship with for me to buy the appliances. 

If I am the Appliance Wholesaler, I want to build a relationship with those builders and those remodeling contractors.  So why wouldn’t I give them a vacation incentive for referring people into my business? 

And that would be so easy to track because someone walks in and they say, hey, my homebuilder sent me here.  I need to pick out all of my appliances.  They could simply keep up with the sales during a particular time and award vacations to those contractors who met a certain goal that they set ahead of time.

Incentive Ideas For Auto Dealers

The typical application is, “Buy a car, and get a vacation”.  So it’s not a chance to win.  They are simply going to get a vacation incentive for the purchase of a new vehicle.   

That’s a really easy application to see but there is some within that Auto Dealership that are not quite as obvious.   For example, if you finance your car, because almost all auto dealerships offer some sort of financing plan, so they can either upgrade the vacation incentive or offer another vacation incentive to someone who would do their financing with that dealership as well. 

Financing is a large area of profitability for the dealership so it’s certainly something worth them buying a vacation incentive to capture financing that they wouldn’t have already had.  Let’s say the consumer is going to their Credit Union or Bank to do their financing so they can use it as a closing tool, “So do you financing with us and get a vacation” or upgrade the vacation from a three day two night to a four day three night vacation. 

The “Be Back” opportunity is tremendous and it’s a wonderful way to get the appointment with the Auto Dealer to start with.  To say I can show you a way that you can get every prospect back into your business before he buys.  The guy who says, “I just started looking.  I’ll be back.”   You know that I want our audience to remember this verbiage because it is not only relevant to Auto Dealers but it could be for a Motorcycle Dealer or a Furniture Store or somebody selling a Jet Ski or something of that nature where they want to get that consumer back.  And that way is, gee, go ahead and shop the marketplace.  Spend your money on gasoline.  I’m sure you are going to come back to our dealership because we have the best service, price, whatever that dealer normally says.  But to show you our commitment to building a long-term relationship with you, we’re going to give you a great family vacation whether you purchase from us or not.

How would that work?

Well, I would then hand my consumer a copy of the stock announcement brochure and say, “This is how that works.  Go out and shop the marketplace to get your best deal.  But if you are back in here by 10 o’clock on Saturday with anyone else’s legitimate written proposal on a comparable vehicle, I am going to bring that to my Sales Manager and he’s going to decide if he wants to match that deal or not.  If he decides that he does not want to match the deal or we can’t come to an agreement on a comparable vehicle, we’re going to give you the vacation incentive whether you purchase or not.”

The Auto Dealer is really likes this because it does give him a way to get that consumer back into his place of business before he buys from someone else.  And obviously, he is not going to give away any vacations to anyone who does not buy from him because it is a legitimate written proposal on a comparable vehicle and he has the opportunity to match that price and he is always going to do that to make that sale.

Incentive Ideas For Banks

The most obvious thing with the Bank, what a Bank sells, loans.  And so get a loan anywhere between $5,000 and $100,000, who knows it might be an auto loan or it might be a home improvement loan or might be a mortgage and get a vacation.

In this industry, normally the typical types of incentive promotions that are run is a discounted rate promotion.  In other words, we are going to give you an eighth of a point discount this month and please get a loan at our bank.  That would be the typical type of promotion.  And it isn’t a vacation!  Much more exciting than an eighth of a point discount in a loan rate.

Not only is it much more exciting when the Banker actually does the math on it, he may find that it is much less expensive. 

And talking about relationships, banks are very, very image conscious.  They are very concerned about appearing local in their communities and I find that it’s really a hot button with Bank Presidents.  The ability for the vacation incentive to help them enhance those relationships.  I might suggest to them that we take pictures of the people that are earning the vacations by doing business at your bank and feature them in a local ad in the newspaper.  Just enhancing that local type image.

I mentioned a threshold of let’s say, $5,000 to $100,000 for a loan.  It is very important what that threshold is.  If the bank says gee, everybody that does a $50,000 loan gets a three day two night vacation incentive let’s say, I don’t think it would have as big an impact as them giving a four day three night vacation at that rate.  And remember that the lower the threshold is for that loan, the more vacations are going to have to be awarded.   

The other thing to create some excitement is the employees being excited.  So why not do a referral program inside the bank where platform people, and those are the people in the lobby of the bank refer people into the loan department and perhaps we can design a little contest to do that.  To create some excitement and to get everybody involved in the vacation incentive experience.

Incentive Ideas For Beauty Supplies

Beauty Supplies seems easy to me.  Most Beauty Supplies sell to Beauticians, those gals that cut hair, and color hair and do all those sorts of things and they want to build their clientele just like any other business.  So they could do a frequent user card and perhaps, every time you come in and make a purchase of “x” amount, they might punch that card.  And once you’ve got ten punches on your card, you are going to get a great family vacation.

Also in the Beauty Supplies industry, cosmetics, hair care products are really great clients for vacations incentives.  So you might keep your eyes open when you are in the Beauty Supply Wholesaler, let’s say, to see what Suppliers they are using because they might be a great entrée where they would give you someone’s card and say gee, you need to call on Nexus, you need to call on whatever manufacturer might be of the particular product.

Because it is important to that Supplier that is putting their products into that Beauty Supply, they would like that Beauty Supply to buy more of their products so might incent them to buy “x” number of cases and we will give you a vacation incentive that you can either use for yourself or give away within the Beauty Supply.

Incentive Ideas For Boat Dealers

Boat Dealers are just like a car dealer is.  These people sell boats.  And what a great idea in terms of “Buy your boat with us and we are going to give you a great vacation.”  A lot of times, Boat Dealers will do trade shows and those trade shows normally occur in the month of January or February, usually very early in the year.  And they might use a vacation incentive in their booth to generate some interest.  “Come into our booth.  Register for a vacation.  Gee, I hope you win but you know, if you’ll just sign a contract for a new boat today, if we can start the ball rolling on financing, we will simply give you one of these vacations.”

Incentive Ideas For Body Shops & Auto Painting 

Next thing on the list is Body Shops and Auto Painting.  These are people who might do business with Car Dealerships in town.  The Car Dealer gets in a used car and wants to get it painted or may have a little ding in it that he wants to have repaired.  So this Body Shop might be trying to develop relationships with various Car Dealers in town and this might be a way for him to get their attention and get them to do business with him.

Even from the Paint Shop aspect, the Paint Shops, a lot of high quality Paint Shops might cost $1,000 or $2,000 and they might actually offer the vacation incentive to the consumer if they do the very, very highest quality paint job and opt for that.   

Incentive Ideas For Bottlers

 The next thing on our list is Bottlers, like Coca-Cola Bottling and those sorts of things.  You would be probably surprised to know that almost every region, almost every medium to small sized town has a local bottler.  It would be a Coca-Cola Bottler, Pepsi Bottler or some of the other companies.  There are a lot of other companies out there.  And those Bottlers are interested in gaining shelf space at grocery stores and increasing their sales.  So we might call on the local Bottler and show them vacation incentives because it is a great incentive for the grocery store owner either for him to take the vacation or to offer it as an award for his staff or a promotional item to be given away at his store.  In other words, “Gee, Mr. Grocery Store owner, if you will simply buy 50 more cases this month than you bought last month, we are going to give you a some vacations, one for yourself, and one to give away at your store” or “We want this end cap, this prime display area.  In order to do that, we will give you a some of vacation incentives.”  That’s generally the way that works.

Incentive Ideas For Bowling Centers

How would a Bowling Center ever use a vacation promotion? 

Well, we could have a vacation bowling league where the bowling center would award vacation incentives to every family that signed up for the league or at the end of the league season, they would award vacations to everyone.  What pays for the vacation is the cost of entering the league and the weekly fees.  This could be very, very exciting.

Incentive Ideas For Builders, Home Builders

The next on our list is Builders, Home Builders.  Well, Home Builders it would be possibly, “Buy your home.  Make your decision this week and buy home with me and we are going to give you a great family vacation as a thank you.”  Or perhaps we might have spec homes built that we want to move.  They are not moving as quickly or being sold as quickly as we would like.  We might offer vacation incentives for those particular homes.  We also might have lots that may not be prime lots.  May be lots that are not in a highly sought after area and we would attach vacations to those lots.  But really I think the prime application for a Builder would be, upgrade your home to these accessories, the high quality carpeting, high quality cabinets.  And if you do that, we are going to award you a great vacation.  So the consumer would look at it and go, “Gee, I got to make a decision on cabinets anyway for a couple of thousand dollars more, I really like these cabinets better and the whole family is going to be awarded a vacation.  So it makes the decision seem pretty easy and the Builder has a lot more profitability now.

Another idea that I can think of for Builders would be to offer the vacation in a sweepstakes type situation for people who come by and visit a model home.  Now I know that sweepstakes don’t generate tremendous amount of vacations to be sold but what it’s going to do for the builder will definitely get you some attention because at the end of the day he is going to have a whole box full of names of people who are at least interested in buying a home.  He can then send out mailers to those people or something of that nature. And so this may just be another idea that you throw out to that Builder and build your relationship with him.

Incentive Ideas For Building Materials 

My favorite incentive promotion was with a little local Lumberyard that asked their Contractors to save their receipts over a certain period of time.  And if they made at least $1,500 in purchases during the promotional period, they could bring their receipts in and turn them in, in exchange for a family vacation.  It was a Dealer Loyalty Program and the idea was to get all of those Contractors and build a relationship with them during the promotional period.  Get them in the habit of traveling to that particular Lumberyard and have a relationship there.  It was a tremendously successful promotion.

Incentive Ideas For Carpeting, Flooring Dealers 

Next up, we have Carpeting, Flooring dealers so we are talking about people who sell indoor/outdoor carpeting, various styles of carpeting and also possibly, also linoleum to wood floors.  “Buy 300 yds. of high quality carpeting and we will give you a great family vacation.”  “Buy our high quality wood flooring and we are going to give you a great vacation.”  So these awards can go directly to the consumer.  They can run an ad.  Create excitement in the community and why shouldn’t someone buy their carpeting from someone offering the vacation incentive than from someone who isn’t.  So it really gives that Carpet store a competitive edge.

Not only does it give them a competitive edge, it gives them a way to move certain products that they may have more profit on than they have on other products.  So they may have particular flooring that perhaps they have some pert from the manufacturer, some advertising dollars available from the manufacturer and those dollars might be available to buy the vacations in order to promote that particular line of flooring.

Incentive Ideas For Casino and Bingo Halls

I look at our vacation product as a good incentive for a Casino that has something called that I call a Player’s Club where you go into the Casino and sign up for a Player’s Club card that shows you’re a frequent gambler let’s say, at the facility and one of the awards for attaining certain point levels for spending a certain amount of money on the slot machines or whatever games they have, is the vacation incentive could be one of those rewards.  So I see that as a really perfect match.

Or perhaps we have a night that is slower than other nights, maybe Monday night is a slower night so the Casino might say, “Gee, we are giving away ten vacations on Monday night.”  Or when you are looking at the perceived value of our product, you might say, “$5,000 in free vacations on Monday night.  Come in and register for these vacations that we’re giving away.”  And thereby Monday night might not be the slowest night of the week anymore.  It may create a lot of excitement.

The same concept can work for Bingo.  Perhaps one of the Bingo games is a Vacation game, that is the main game of the night.  So a great family vacation given away.  What pays for that vacation?  Well, the cost of people buying the cards so it more than offsets the cost of the vacation and again we are coming to our three to one value.  The great perceived value of the vacation being somewhere between $500 and $1,000 and only costing let’s say, the Bingo Hall much less than that.  So it is a great value for them.

And they can advertise that in advance and let people know this is the particular night that is happening and hopefully they will increase the crowd on that particular night. 

Incentive Ideas For Cellular Phone Dealers 

Next on our list are Cellular Phone Dealers.  Would this be sign up for a longer-term contract, perhaps a two-year contract and you get the vacation incentive?  I wouldn’t think the obvious application would be buy a phone, get a vacation.  A lot of the phones are given away now a days.  There is not that much margin on phones.  But the service has a little bit more margin and it’s maybe sign a two-year contract with us and get a vacation. 

Or there are various service plans and maybe they would give it away with the higher end plan to encourage people to take the higher end plan, more minutes, etc.  And let’s not forget about the competitiveness between the individual phone manufacturers where they might offer vacation incentives to the Cellular Dealer or as an incentive for the Cellular Dealer and the consumer to buy their phone versus someone else’s phone.  So, the Cellular Dealer as you said earlier, in terms of coop funds may not have to pay for all of this. 

Incentive Ideas For Chamber Of Commerce

Next on the list is Chamber of Commerce.  Every town has a Chamber of Commerce.  A Chamber might use the vacation incentives for someone buying a higher end membership, let’s say a gold membership versus a silver membership.  And that gold membership would entitle you to have two vacations, one for yourself to enjoy as a Chamber member and great supporter of the Chamber and another to give away at your place of business.  Possibly the local Chamber might be a furniture store, let’s say, and they can offer the vacation at their store as a give away or a sweepstakes item.  What the Chamber is trying to do is increase the number of members and increase the funds that the members are giving them.  Sometimes, those premium memberships really help to do that.

And every year Chambers have membership drives and so it is a perfect time for them to award vacations to their people who are out contacting all the businesses trying to get them to join the Chamber.  Again that goes back to possibly one of those where everyone can win.  Everybody who sells a certain number of memberships or a certain number of the gold memberships, the high dollar memberships will get a vacation incentive.

Another thing that you hear on major city Chamber of Commerce's is that they will have some type of trade show amongst the members where all the members will have a booth at the show and members of the community can come in and visit the show and thereby see all the different types of businesses that are represented by the Chamber.  And we might have a vacation give-away in each of those booths so part of the booth cost may include the vacation incentive.  So it is a pretty exciting concept that again could be a profit center for the Chamber.

Incentive Ideas For Club Memberships, Spa, Gym

Club Memberships.  We are talking about the local spa, the local gym, the Country Club.  I see the perfect application for them is a long-term membership possibly a lifetime membership would include a vacation as part of their sign up fee.  And included somewhere in that sign up fee of that lifetime membership would be the actual cost that the club was paying for the vacation incentive.

Incentive Ideas For Copy Machine Dealers 

By our copy machine. Buy our high quality, high performance copy machine and we are going to give you Mr. Business Owner a great vacation for yourself or to use in your place of business as an award, a safety award, an attendance award, an employee of the month award or however, the business would choose to give it away.  Or perhaps we could include the vacation as an extra bonus for somebody signing up for a long-term maintenance contract. 

Incentive Ideas For Credit Unions

Are Credit Unions really different from Banks?  Not really, it is just that Credit Unions sell to members.  Their customers are members not customers.  So perhaps another idea that I point out to Credit Unions is I ask them if they are interested in picking up new members and where might those memberships come from?  And a lot of time its businesses in the community.  So I suggest to them to set up membership goals at those particular businesses.  In other words, let’s say the typical members signing up at the Credit Union in a particular month at that particular business that the Credit Union is drawing its members from might be twenty.  And I’ll say, “Well, gee, why don’t we run an award for the Human Resources Manager at that business and if he can get another let’s say twenty-five of his employees to sign up this month versus the twenty that signed up the month before, we will award that business with a vacation incentive.  And they really like that.

Incentive Ideas For Doctors

Now here’s one that I bet most people haven’t thought about, and that’s Doctors.  But there are a lot of elective procedures these days and Doctors could award a vacation incentive for having an elective procedure, some kind of plastic surgery or something like that.

Of course, I would assume that there’s very high profit in those particular types of surgeries and usually, as you said, they’re elective and if I were a doctor, I would want referrals.  I mean that would be a great source of income for me is if one of my patients could refer other patients to me so I might award a vacation incentive for that.

Incentive Ideas For Door Companies

Doors can be quite expensive, so we might look at a company that sells doors as offering the vacation incentive for the purchase of their high quality doors, their more expensive doors, whatever the case might be.  Companies in every major city do that and it is usually quite competitive so “Get your door with us and get a great vacation for either yourself or your company”.

Incentive Ideas For Dentists

Dentists.  Well, when I think of Dentists, in terms of using incentive products, I think of Orthodontics and the tremendous cost of child’s orthodontics, braces.  And I look at spending four or five thousand dollars for a procedure like that and saying gee, the vacation incentive is just a perfect match.  It is family oriented and go through this procedure with us and we are going to send you and your family on a great vacation.

Incentive Ideas For Drycleaners

The Drycleaner obviously is wanting repeat business.  He’s wanting people to do more business with him.  He’s wanting to build loyalty amongst his customers.  So this could be a sweepstakes situation where every time you come in you put your name in the hat and obviously the more often you are in, the more entries you have in the hat.  We found a way at even at a Dry-cleaning Store that they could use our vacations as an incentive to increase their sales.

Many Drycleaners are also chains.  So a Drycleaner that is opening up a new location and wants to create a splash with that.  Vacation Incentives are a perfect application for creating a splash for a new location.

Incentive Ideas For e-Commerce

I have e-Commerce as next.  And I look at our product on an e-Commerce basis in other words, someone’s web site as a great vacation giveaway.  Sign up on our web site.  Buy something on our web site and we are going to throw in a great family vacation.  Or anybody visiting our web site this month is going to be entered into a drawing for a vacation.  All you need to do is register on our site or register for our service that we are offering.  So it’s an exciting enticement for someone to visit that web site more or often.  Just visit the site.  Look at the information on it.  Possibly look at the products we have available and get a great vacation as a possibility.

Incentive Ideas For Feed Stores

Feed stores sell a lot more than feed.  They often sell farmers a lot of seed.  They will often sell farm equipment, things of that nature as well.  So the Feed Store may have a number of different applications for the vacation incentive and a number of customers that they may be able to award it to.  These purchases could be literally thousands of dollars.  So quite an enticement for the great vacation for the whole family.  And all they are trying to do is to get people to do business with them versus someone else.  

Incentive Ideas For Flower Shop

The local flower shop, “Buy a bouquet, and get a vacation?”  Well not exactly, in most major communities there will be a wholesale Florist shop where Florists buy their flowers.  So just imagine a wholesale Flower Shop where literally hundreds of Florists in their particular area come daily and pick up flowers.   

Incentive Ideas For Funeral Homes

Funeral Homes will frequently sell pre-need plans.  And what a great way to create a sense of urgency to buy a pre-need plan than to offer a family vacation incentive.

You know it is kind of an obscure application, but I have actually made a call on a couple of different funeral homes that do this.  And they actually had a group of telemarketers that worked for the funeral home in order to encourage calls to potential future clients, which is everyone that might have a need for their services.  But you know talking about funerals, it is kind of a depressing thing but the vacation incentive kind of adds fun to it.  So it was fun to talk about and they had a successful promotion.

Incentive Ideas For Furniture Stores

Got an idea here?  It’s “Buy a room full of furniture, get a vacation” or “Upgrade your purchase from let’s say, $1,000 to $1,500 and you’re going to be able to earn the vacation.  So an extra added inducement and excitement for someone to upgrade their sale or to buy a higher quality piece of furniture.   

And well, a typical Furniture Store let’s says their average sale is $1,000 and if you can show them a way to increase that sale up to twelve or $1,300 by simply adding a vacation incentive to it and say, “Mr. Customer, you’ve picked out a $1,000 worth of furniture. With a purchase of $1,200, you’ll get the great family vacation.  Why don’t you go ahead and put the lamps on layaway?  I know that you like them anyways.”

And you know, Furniture Stores are another type of business that would offer financing.  So possibly we’ll upgrade from a three-day two-night to a four-day three-night if you want to do the financing through us because it is probably somewhat of a profit center for them.

I just think this is a great secret application.  Golf courses in many communities really like to do golf tournaments for businesses or let’s say, charities in their area.  It’s good business for them.  So a lot of time amongst the Golf Courses there’s competition as to who is going to get the golf tournament.  So what if we offered businesses vacation incentives to do their tournament at our golf course versus someone else’s.  And that business could in turn give those vacations away as a prize for the tournament or perhaps the golf course themselves can offer the vacations.

How is this going to work, Wayne?  Well, perhaps we can run this as a traffic builder for a grand opening or simply a traffic builder at the store.  “Come on in to the store and you have a chance to earn a vacation.”  A better way though and a way to increase more sales is possibly to put a notice on the cash register receipt, a star, or some type of vacation scene on the receipt and whoever gets that star on their receipt, gets that vacation incentive.  And the longer you cash register receipt is, the better chance you have of winning the vacation.  Thereby, the grocery store can increase their sales and still have that great excitement.

The other thing that interests Grocery Stores is their image in the community.  Let’s take pictures of the winners.  Let’s paint that picture of the Grocery Store enhancing their image by awarding vacations to their customers.

Hospitals are next on the list.  Is this “Get you appendectomy here and get a free vacation”?  No, not quite, but Hospitals are in dire need of Nurses.  And I see a Hospital as using the vacation as an extra incentive to recruit Nurses because let’s face it in a particular community there may be two, five, ten Hospitals all competing for that same group of Nurses.  So it’s not only “Come and go to work for us” but “Come and go to work for us and possibly get a sign on bonus and a free vacation certificate.” 

Hospitals are also a perfect application for giving away attendance awards.  “Show up for work, on time “x” number of days in a row and we will give you a great family vacation.”

HVAC, those Heating and Air Conditioning companies, what a perfect application.  “Buy a high efficiency air conditioning system, get a vacation incentive.” “Buy a high efficiency heating system, a heat pump, get a vacation certificate.”  “Replace your whole system, get a vacation.”  So this is a tremendous area and when we look in our local communities you’ll possibly see dozens of businesses that are doing that and they are all in competition with one another.

These are also companies that want to build Contractor loyalty and so they might award vacation incentives to Contractors for coming back to them and buying heating and air conditioning units from them.  “Increase the amount of business that you do with us this six months over what you did the last six months, we’ll give you a great family vacation.”

Malls are next on the list.  Malls are always interested in doing something to increase traffic right there in the mall. Perhaps we can have a vacation getaway at the Mall and various stores paying a fee that more than would pay for the cost of the vacation incentives to the Mall Owner and the Mall Management.  And those stores would have a vacation giveaway a particular weekend let’s say, “A fourth of July vacation giveaway at our Mall.  Come and visit the participating stores.”  So it’s a great idea for the Store Owner, it’s very inexpensive and builds traffic.

Next on the list is Manufacturers and this is a Manufacturer of any particular kind of product.  Every Manufacturer is trying to take his product to market and why not use vacation incentives to incent his customers to buy more of his product versus his competitor.

You know we say Manufacturers in general because all these factories they’re building something.  And they’re all trying to sell their product and move it through whatever their lines of distribution are.   Maybe it is direct to you and I the consumer, or it could be a distributor, or it could be a wholesaler.  They are all avenues for offering the vacation incentives.  So whether we are talking about Cosmetics, or Doors or Windows or Shelving or Widgets, everything is made somewhere.  And every one of those products that are made has to be sold to someone.

Next on the list is Manufactured Homes.  And what a great application, “Buy your home here, get a vacation.”

You know, many times I would call on Manufactured Home Dealers and I ask them what promotions that they’re doing right now.  And they’re giving away free skirting to go around the home, or some type of little accessory which to me would be pretty meaningless for me as the Home Buyer.  But the vacation, a great family vacation, where I can take my children on a possibly a once in a lifetime trip to Orlando or Washington D.C. to see all the sites there, I think it is just perfect for the Manufactured Home industry.  Generally, manufactured home buyers are new families just getting started, just getting, trying to get a piece of ownership in their own place.  So vacation incentives are very important to them and the chance of getting a free vacation is even more important.

Incentive Ideas For Mortgage Companies 

Next we have Mortgage Companies.  And Mortgage Companies are a financial institution similar to Banks where we can incent consumers to get loans with our Mortgage Company by offering them the vacation award.  “Get your mortgage with us, and get a vacation.”  Typically, Mortgage Companies offer a rate promotion.  A discounted interest rate is their typical type of promotion and the vacation promotion can really create a lot of excitement.

We also have to remember that there is normal Mortgage Companies, which means those, that sell people with high credit ratings and there are also Mortgage Companies that focus on what we call potential B&C potential clients, where they might do direct mail pieces and things of that nature to develop business.  So what’s very important to that type of Mortgage Company is to get more people to look at the materials that they’re sending out through the mail and our vacation information can certainly help them with that.  Imagine on the outside of the envelope that the Mortgage Company might send, logos of Hilton and Hyatt.  Certainly someone would open up that envelope and read what is inside and the Mortgage Company can develop business from that.

The other things Mortgage Companies are interested in is developing relationships with Builders.  So we talked about Builders earlier where someone might come to the home site and register for vacation incentives that are given away.   All those names in the box are very worthwhile to the Builder.  Well, they can be very worthwhile to the Mortgage Company also if the Mortgage Company officer would get creative and would offer vacations for free to the Builder.

Movers are next on the list.  Those people that move you across the country.  Well, if I was going to relocate and use a Mover I would probably get competitive bids, so I can see the vacation offering me a competitive edge if I was a Moving company versus another company that wasn’t offering the vacation incentives.

Incentive Ideas For Newspapers

Newspapers are next on the list.  Newspapers sell advertising.  That’s their product and they usually have a tremendous client base within the community.  How could they use the vacation incentives to get their customers to buy more advertising?

Well, the first place I would start, would be with the Editor or the Ad Director of the Newspaper.  They’re usually very familiar with promotions.  And the way our promotion works is we’re trying to get their customers to spend a little bit more this quarter versus the same quarter last year on advertising.   And our enticement is going to be vacation incentives.  The vacations can create a lot of excitement at their store.

So what we would do is, we would go into the Newspaper and we would talk to them about helping their salespeople go out and increase their sales.  So each salesperson might go out into the community armed with a certain number of vacations and he might go to we’ll say, a Furniture Store for example.  Now he already has a relationship with the Furniture Store Owner, in most cases, wouldn’t he?  Because he’s already been selling that Furniture Store Owner advertising.

So he has the relationship there so he can go in and say, “Wayne, I have a wonderful opportunity for you this month as we are putting your ad together.  If you’ll spend “x” number of dollars more with me this month than what you spent last month, I can put you into our great vacation promotion.  In other words, just spend a little bit more money with me than you did last month; you’re going to get two family vacations.”  And we are going to use this as an example, “One that you can give away in the store, Wayne, and one that you can use for yourself.  And the newspaper’s going to be running some special ads this month for all the different businesses that participate in this great vacation giveaway.”  Is that how you see this working, Wayne?

What our audience needs to understand is when that Newspaper advertising salesperson is calling on that Furniture Store, he is not really asking him to spend any more money ­­­in terms of a­dvertising budget.  In reality he’s simply saying spend your advertising budget with me the local newspaper versus radio or T.V.  Newspapers, radio and T.V. are very competitive with one another so it is simply trading dollars and having more money spent at the newspaper versus those other types of media.  And that for the business owner means really no more expenditure.

So perhaps this month if he wants, the newspaper is asking him to spend the extra 10% with them, all he is going to do is transfer some of the money that he might be spending on radio or television to the Newspaper. Normally, in the advertising industry they’re dealing with quarters so it wouldn’t be this month versus last, it would generally be this quarter versus the same quarter last year.  And the Newspaper’s probably going to run some special ads promoting this so the Furniture Store that we use in our example is going to get their advertising that they bought plus they’re going to be mentioned in the special advertising that the Newspaper is going to be doing.

Next on the list is Opticians and this is so obvious to me.  Opticians these days are advertising Lasik and various other procedures for correcting vision on the radio and on television all the time.  This is an elective procedure.  What a great enticement to encourage people to go and have these procedures with a particular doctor.

And yes, another great source of referrals.  “You’re a very pleased patient and gee, if you can give me three referrals of other people you know and they do the procedure with me, I’ll give you a great family vacation in return.”   And it makes you to start brainstorming the different relatives and friends you have that might be interested in that procedure and don’t you want that procedure for them if you’re happy.

Piano Stores, Organs, Music Stores, what great prospects for a family vacation incentives!  “Get your piano with us, and we’re going to give you a great family vacation.”  It just makes perfect sense.  And pianos, Susan, normal cost of a piano is going to be four, five, ten twenty thousand dollars in some cases, plenty of margin in there to include the vacation incentive.  And what a great way to encourage people to go on and take action now rather than putting off and buying their piano till later.

Incentive Ideas For Photography Studios

Photography Studios, Portrait Studios, again very profitable.  “Buy a package valued at six, or seven or a thousand dollars and we’re going to give you a great family vacation.”

Incentive Ideas For Pools and Spas

Perfect application.  Swimming Pools and Spas.  Boy, if this isn’t perfect, I don’t know what is.  Normal cost of a pool is going to be what fifteen thousand, twenty thousand dollars, somewhere in that neighborhood.  Certainly, for a commitment from a client to have us do the work on their new pool and we’re going to give them a great vacation.  While their yard is torn up, we’re going to send them, you know, to Las Vegas or Washington or the Northwest or the Northeast to have a great family vacation.   And Spas are exactly the same application.

Incentive Ideas For Plumbing Wholesalers

Plumbing Wholesalers, I’m going to throw that into the category of other Wholesalers where they’re trying to incent Contractors to buy more.  Look at seven in the morning see who’s inside that store.  It’s basically Plumbers picking up supplies for the jobs that they have in that particular area.   There may be a number of different Plumbing Wholesalers in a particular community, we want to have the competitive edge and give the Contractor a reason to drive maybe a little bit out of his way to buy his plumbing supplies from us versus someone else.  And a typical promotion might be, “Buy $2,500 worth of plumbing supplies within the next six weeks, and we’re going to give you a great vacation.”

Incentive Ideas For Printers

Printers are always looking for new clients or they’re trying to keep loyalty with the people they are already doing printing for.  How would they use the vacation incentives?  

It’s a great thank you for the businesses that are doing business with them right now and again it’s increase your sales.  “Gee, you did $10,000 in printing with us in the last six months.  If you’ll increase this in the next six months to twelve or $13,000, we’ll be happy to give you a great vacation.”  In fact, you might say something like, “For every $5,000 in printing that you do with us, we’re going to keep giving you vacations.”  Building that relationship, giving them incentives to keep that business coming their way.  The printing business is extremely competitive.  A lot of bids going on so there’s nothing that that Printing Company would like more than to develop that loyalty with big business.

Next on the list is Professionals.  And I think these are people we are talking about Accountants and Attorneys and even Doctors in some cases.  All these people may use the vacation incentives year round as a way to thank people for referrals that they might get.  But they’re also very, very busy people and it’s a perfect gift item for them and just can work so well if they are just aware that you have the vacations as something that they might give to their clients to say, “Hey, thanks for doing business with me in the past year”.

How would Real Estate work?  Real Estate can work in terms of offering an incentive to the individual Real Estate Agents.  In other words, I might make call on the Real Estate Agency Owner and tell him about the benefits of offering vacation incentives as an incentive to his Real Estate Agents for who’s the best person at getting listings, signing up people, selling homes, things of that nature.  There are legalities involved with Real Estate Agents offering it to a consumer for listing their home with them, so we’re not talking Real Estate Agent to consumer; we are talking Real Estate Owner to his particular Agent. But Real Estate Agents can give a thank you for listing a home with them.

Incentive Ideas For Retail Stores

Well, Retail Stores is kind of a general category where you can build traffic at your store by offering the vacation incentives as a giveaway.  I just think that most retail stores are going to get into some sort of sweepstakes situation and I would like to encourage people that as they go out and sell sweepstakes to not keep this as a one vacation giveaway but to encourage them to do a vacation given away every day or a vacation given away every Friday for the next six or eight weeks, something of that nature.  This will build excitement as well as really increase the business for the retailer.

Incentive Ideas For Restaurants

How would Restaurants use vacations?  Well, there’s probably a number of ways.  And let’s start with, “Buy a steak, get a vacation.”  Well, I guess that’s not really relevant.  But there’s a number of things that Restaurants are trying to accomplish.  Possibly a major Restaurant might have a contest with their Food Servers to increase an average check.  So they might give away vacation incentives to their staff for a certain performance over let’s say, a month period of time.  So if I can sell desserts this month and increase my average ticket by 10 or 15% I might get the vacation incentive at the end of the month if I did that overall.  And the profitability to the Restaurant more than pays for the vacation.

You know, another great opportunity I think is with major Restaurant chains. A lot of times we can call on Regional offices for those chains and I think the vacation is a great incentive for Managers.  Where the Regional Manager might visit certain stores in that chain and have performance goals for them.  Or perhaps a Manager got a great score on his Health Department score, whatever the case may be.  Perhaps he has his displays up properly, and that Regional Manager would reach in his briefcase and simply hand that Manager a great vacation as an instant thank you and “’Atta Boy” for him.  So I think that can really build a relationship and really increase performance and get that Restaurant chain to accomplish what they want.

Another idea that comes to mind for me that’s in the Restaurant category is the Pizza idea with the Pizza Delivery fellow.  Every 500th pizza is going to get a family vacation.  "It could be you" and put it right on the box.  Do a great promotion saying, “The 500th pizza that we deliver is going to get a great family vacation and it could be you!”

Roofing Companies, a typical type of application would be, “Get your roofing done with us.  You are going to get a vacation.  I will be back next Friday.  Let me take a look at the other bids that you have and if you’ll give us a chance to show you that we have a more than comparable product to those bids or at least let give us a chance to match it, we are going to give you a great vacation.”

Incentive Ideas For R.V. Dealers

Isn’t that R.V. Dealer going to tell me he is selling “a vacation on wheels”? He is, but when I go to a places like Las Vegas, I see a parking lot full of R.V. vehicles and people staying actually at the hotel.  So people don’t live in recreational vehicles, they simply take them as part of their vacation and certainly during their stay, they’re going to want to stay a couple of days at a great hotel.  And why can’t that hotel be one of them that’s on our vacation program?  So it’s a great addition to the purchase of the R.V.  “As our thank you, we’re going to give you a great vacation.”

The R.V. Dealer certainly could create a sense of urgency in talking with his clients, “Say if you purchase before the end of this month, you’ve got the great family vacation to go along with this recreational vehicle.”

Security Systems and probably it’s not going to be for the installation of a Security System but again, it’s going to be that service contract.  Getting people to sign up on a longer-term contract for them to monitor that Security System. 

Although there are some Security Stores out there these days that sell a number of different security products and again that can get back into the Manufacturer.  There will be Manufacturers there that have a number of different security items that they are wanting to push.  So that is just another opportunity that people might take a look at.

Siding would be, “Get your siding with us and get a vacation”.  And another opportunity for them to get a look at the last bid.  What a closing opportunity!

Team Uniforms.  Well, in terms of Team Uniforms, a lot of, let’s look at Little Leagues where the team has to be supplied with uniforms.  So if I owned a Team Uniform store I would want to give an incentive for the teams in my city to come to me versus a competitive store.  So why wouldn’t I offer vacation incentives to every team that came in?  And that team would be awarded the vacation and they could use it as a fundraiser to raise funds to pay for those uniforms that I’m selling.  I think it’s just a beautiful match. Or the Coach could just take it and go on vacation too for all the hard work as the coach. 

Incentive Ideas For Trade Organizations 

Trade Organizations.  Trade Organizations, when I think of Trade Organizations, I think of Trade Shows.  And a lot of Trade Organizations have Trade Shows in their industry.  Maybe it’s the milk producers’ industry or the packaging industry, they all have shows and they might offer our vacation incentives to members that sign up for special memberships, or higher cost memberships or simply to use at their Trade Shows.  “Come into our booth.  Register for a vacation that we’re giving away.”  Each of the members can do that in their booth and the Trade Organization can sponsor that.  And the way they sponsor it is by getting people buying booths to purchase the vacation as part of the cost of the booth space.

 Well another idea that comes to mind for me is if that Trade Organization is sponsoring a Trade Show.  They are probably going out to their various members and trying to get them to participate in that Trade Show.  They’re probably going to charge them a certain fee for their booth at the Trade Show.  So they might attach vacation incentives to the larger booth spaces.  “Last year Wayne, you got a 10’ x 10’ booth at the show.  This year you might upgrade to a 10’ x 20’ booth, because with every 10’ x 20’ booth we’ve got a great family vacation that we can give you that you can either use at your booth to draw attention or you can just go on vacation yourself, Wayne.”

Trucking companies.  Trucking companies have clients that ship freight across the country.  And it’s pretty big business.  So a Trucking company might offer the vacation incentives to someone for giving them all of their freight business, is that right?Or at least increasing that freight business.    Let’s look at what these companies are selling.  Trucking companies are selling freight services.   

A couple of other things that come to mind, a lot trucking companies are interested in recruiting drivers.  You’ll see ads on the backs of their trucks sometimes, saying call this number.  We need drivers.  This is a great opportunity for you.  Once again the vacation incentives can be again an extra incentive to recruit drivers to their company versus someone else’s.

Windows is next on the list.  It’s another one that is similar to Doors, or Roofing, or Siding or any of those building trades companies.  “Get your windows done with us.  Get a whole house of windows done.  Buy us and we’re going to give you a great family vacation.”  And many Window companies are trying to build loyalty with Contractors as well.

Window Treatments. Draperies, blinds, big, big business.  Very expensive product and this might be an industry where the Window Treatment store is trying to build relationships with Interior Designers, Interior Decorators as well as possibly with Contractors who might be putting blinds into little spec homes and things of that nature.

Speaking of competitive businesses, Yellow Page Advertising.  There are all kinds of different telephone books out there in this day and age.  And Yellow Page Advertising is quite expensive so it’s not unreasonable for a company to be paying possibly $500 a month for that advertising.  And if I was paying $500 a month for advertising, I sure would like that Yellow Page Advertising Directory Manager to offer me a vacation incentive for my business.

Well, what he might do is he might come in and say, “Wayne, last year you took a two column inch ad and this year we would like to see you upgrade that to a quarter page and if you did that we have this wonderful family vacation that we could include in your advertising package.”

Or perhaps I, as the Business Owner, would want to include a vacation as an extra incentive on the coupons in the back of the Yellow Pages to just add a point of difference and to show why my business is a little bit different.  Or the Yellow Page company could offer me that opportunity saying, “Do you want to participate in our special Vacation Celebration Coupons?”

 Last on the lists, is Zoos.  If we’re going to have a session that says basically applications from A to Z, then we must have a Z.  So let’s make it Zoos.  I would think that Zoos would be someone I would call on if they were going to use our product as a fundraiser, possibly a special member award, or member Thank Yous to give their top contributors.

 

We have covered a lot of different industries.  I think that anybody ought to have a way to expand their consciousness here of lots of different ways to call on different businesses and give them tons of ideas of ways to use the vacation incentive promotion.
